This is a step towards future and progress !

Scientists have created a new material called the "Carbon Aerogel" in the early 1990s. (An "aerogel" material is a gel in which the liquid component is replaced with gas. This is a very low density solid with several remarkable properties, including its ability to insulate thermally.)

Born of a Chinese research scientist from Zhejiang University, Professor Gao Chou (http://www.fe.zju.edu.cn/english/redir.php?catalog_id=6589&object_id=7149), has created a new material that is the lightest having never been designed by man.

This material is composed of granite and carbon nanotubes, and besides his record weight, its absorption capacity equally exceptional: its spongy material is capable of sucking by capillary action up to 900 times its weight in liquid. The airgel is made up 99.8% of air with a density as low as 3 mg / cm³, 16 mg per cubic meter.

It could be used in many fields such as ecology, where the Carbon Aerogel would come to support the cleaning of coasts and oceans by volunteers in case of oil spills.
